When the world went into lockdown, Disney offered up a bunch of digital treats to help ease the weirdness – but only in the US. Across the Atlantic, they got The Rise Of Skywalker early on VOD, Frozen 2 on Disney+, and the early digital release (and subsequent Disney+ arrival) of Pixar’s latest (and very, very good) adventure, the family fantasy quest Onward. Sadly, release window politics – which are very much in discussion right now – meant that the same schedule couldn’t be replicated here.
But after a few weeks of waiting, Onward is about to get a Digital HD release in the UK, arriving on all the usual virtual stores from Monday 4 May – that’s next week, if you’ve lost all track of time in lockdown. The physical Blu-ray, DVD, and 4K Ultra-HD release will follow on 1 June. There’s still no sign yet of when the film will arrive on Disney+, though The Rise Of Skywalker is hitting the service two months early on May the 4th as a Star Wars day treat. Frozen 2, meanwhile, is set to join Disney+ UK from 17 July.
Released shortly before lockdown, Onward suffered from a muted box office reception as a result – though it received critical acclaim, and is sure to bring some much-needed entertainment as social distancing continues. Read here to see where it ended up in Empire’s ranking of every Pixar movie.
