Pixar's latest animated adventure, Onward arrived in Stateside cinemas (and began its worldwide rollout) this weekend. And despite worries over lower attendance because of Coronavirus concerns, that turned out to be less of a concern than the film itself performing at the lower end of expectations, taking a studio-estimated $40 million for its first three days.
That also includes the take from some preview screenings held the previous weekend, but still represents a less successful Pixar entry. It might not seem low, but when you consider that Toy Story 4 arrived to more than $120 million, it's not as comforting as it could be for the company. Still, we can expect it to head towards profitability when all is said and done. Also suffering slightly – with viral fears having more of an effect in closures and quarantines – was the overseas take, as the movie made $28 million for a $68 million global total so far.
The Invisible Man, meanwhile, continues to see success, slipping just one place to second and adding $15.1 million. That's an impressive drop of around 46.3% and the movie has $52.6 million domestically. Third place was The Way Back, (to be released as Finding The Way Back here next month) which sees Ben Affleck as a former school basketball star struggling with tragedy and addiction who is hired to coach his old team's new crop of players. The drama earned $8.5 million. Sonic The Hedgehog was down to fourth on $8 million, while The Call Of The Wild rounded out the top five with $7 million.
At sixth, Emma expanded its release and jumped up from 13th place for $5 million (and $6.8 million so far), while Bad Boys For Life was down to seventh on $3 million. Birds Of Prey slipped a couple of places to eighth place, while Impractical Jokers: The Movie fell to ninth via $1.8 million. Anime release My Hero Academia: Heroes Rising was 10th with $1.5 million.
