He scored several Oscar nominations for the ambitious and commercially successful 1917, but for his next film, Sam Mendes is looking to tackle something on a slightly smaller scale. He has Olivia Colman on board for the lead in Empire Of Light and we already approve of at least 33.333 per cent of that title.
Mendes also wrote the script for this one, which according to Variety, is a love story set in and around a beautiful old cinema on the South Coast of England in the 1980s. Even more promisingly? The movie will reunite Mendes with top cinematographer Roger Deakins.
Searchlight Pictures is backing the film, and we'd expect it to start shooting this year.
