Now that Oliver Stone is finished making Wall Street: Money Never Sleeps, he’s free to start considering his next directing job. And while he’s weighing several options, he appears to be zeroing in on the adaptation of John D MacDonald’s tome The Deep Blue Goodbye.
The film itself would be titled T**ravis McGee **after its private eye/treasure hunter hero but will largely be based on Goodbye, the first of 21 novels, published in 1964. You'll be shocked - shocked, we tell you! - to learn that Fox is crossing its fingers in the hopes of the series becoming franchise fodder.
That said, Leonardo DiCaprio is producing the film through his Appian Way company, and is attached to star as McGee. He’s not exactly a man drawn to franchises, but we’re sure he’d be happy to work on at least a couple of movies if Stone jumps aboard.
Goodbye's plot finds McGee reluctantly giving up the comforts of his Florida houseboat to go searching for riches buried by a solider after World War Two. The adaptation has been developing for a while now, slipping through the fingers of Robert Schewntke and Gary Fleder, but Stone's interest means it'll probably gather a little more momentum.
