After storming the box office charts here and elsewhere in the world last weekend, Tom Cruise and director Joseph Kosinski brought the Oblivion road show home to the US, and scored a solid first weekend. With no wide competition, the sci-fi film took in $38.1 million, according to studio estimates.
Jackie Robinson drama 42 stayed strong, earning $18 million for second place, with The Croods sticking in third with $9.5 million. Scary Movie 5 fell to fourth, earning $6.3 million while** G.I. Joe: Retaliation** rounded out the top five with $5.7 million.
Derek Cianfrance’s latest Ryan Gosling pic T****he Place Beyond The Pines added cinemas and roared up the charts from 10th to sixth place, scoring $4.7 million along the way. White House action thriller Olympus Has Fallen, meanwhile, stayed in seventh, making $4.5 million. The new Evil Dead (which you can hear all about on last week’s Empire Podcast) was eighth with $4.1 million and Jurassic Park 3D took in $4 million in ninth. Finally, **Oz The Great And Powerful **seems set to leave the top 10 after a successful couple of months, adding $3 million for a running US total of $223.7 million.
