There's not a soul among us who hasn't whiled away the wee hours reminiscing about Children's TV. Not the Tweenies and Teletubbies of today's spoilt youth, but the halcyon days of Bagpuss, Mr Ben, Bod and King Rollo. But amid the stable of childhood TV staples, there can be few names that bring a tear to your eye and a smile to your face like Hong Kong Phooey. He was the number one super guy, he was quicker than the human eye and, with a little help from his cat Spot, could take out the bad guys with his Hong Kong Phooey chop. Possibly the only reason to brave Cheggers and Noel Edmunds on the Multi-Coloured Swap Shop, Hong Kong Phooey was a marvel of martial arts mayhem and, praise be, he's coming to the big screen soon. A live action rendering of the canine crimefighter is the order of the day with Scooby Doo-esque CGI destined to bring him to life in all his glory. Red Dragon director Brett Ratner's Rat Entertainment will be developing the project, though whether Ratner will direct the adaptation himself has yet to be decided. For those of you who missed out (and you'll never know how much), Hong Kong Phooey was none other than Penry, the mild-mannered janitor. When duty called, he would dive into a handy filing cabinet and emerge as the bumbling, masked vigilante who wouldn't have lived five minutes if it weren't for Spot watching his back.
Number One Super-Guy
Move over Daredevil, it's Hong Kong Phooey
