If you’re a Sex And The City fan, then you’ll no doubt have been keeping an eye on developments concerning the long-awaited movie version of the HBO TV show.
You’ll have noted that the show’s executive producer, Michael Patrick King, will write and direct the movie, and that the four principals – Sarah Jessica Parker’s Carrie, Kim Cattrall’s Samantha, Cynthia Nixon’s Miranda and Kristin Davis’ Charlotte – have all signed on the line that is dotted.
But you’ll also have noticed that so far there’s been a decidedly big hole in the movie plans – a Mr. Big-shaped hole, to be precise. And today that hole was filled when it was confirmed that Chris Noth will indeed appear in the movie as Mr. Big, Carrie’s long-term on/off lover, who we last saw sweeping her off her feet (for good?) in the show’s finale.
"There is no need for funeral arrangements," said King, in a statement. "I assure you that Mr. Big is a very 'big' part of the 'Sex and the City' movie.”
How big, we don’t know yet, as details of the plot have yet to be announced. But Noth’s participation in the movie (not a given; he’s a cast member on Law & Order: Criminal Intent, and may not have been able to make the shooting schedule) is a good sign for SATC fans, who will have been wondering if the movie would act as a stand-alone, and ignore the events of the TV series, particularly that last episode. This would seem to indicate ‘no’, although we’re wagering that King will still incorporate elements into the movie to ensnare those who didn’t watch the TV show – so look out for a big-name cameo or two.
And now, of course, there are other questions that remain unanswered: will Samantha’s toyboy lover, Smith, return? What about Miranda’s Steve? Have Charlotte and Harry finally adopted their little Chinese baby? And how the HELL does a straight man know so much about this show without looking (honest) at Wikipedia?
All will be revealed in due course, readers! (But the answer to the last one is: girlfriend and a Sex And The City box set that she insists on watching all the bloody time)
