Things have been quiet on the casting front for Tony Gilroy’s sideways continuation of the Jason Bourne universe with The Bourne Legacy. But today brings news that Gilroy appears to have found the man who will cause trouble in the movie, with Edward Norton now in negotiations to play the bad guy.

Gilroy is keeping the plot cards close to his chest for now, but what we do know is that Matt Damon’s Bourne is not likely to appear (though there’s always a scant chance of a surprise cameo, we suppose). Nope, this time around the hero will be Jeremy Renner, playing a yet-to-be-named assassin who is having similar identity issues who is part of an operation that turns out to be even more deadly than Bourne’s labyrinthine nemesis Treadstone.

As for Norton? Beyond his generally evil status, we’re not sure what he’ll be up to just yet. But it’s the first time he’s played a flat-out villain for a while.

Rachel Weisz is also now officially aboard after being announced as in talks back in May. We wonder if she’ll get to enjoy a slice of the action and has been taking any tips from her new hubbie (Daniel Craig, in case you missed that news)…

There’s no word on when Legacy will kick off shooting, but it’ll be out on August 17, 2012.
