Lots of older (and not-so-old) movies have been targeted by the reboot machine in recent years, and the same phenomenon has been striking TV too. The latest show headed back to screens in quirksome comedy drama Northern Exposure.
Rob Morrow, who starred as Dr. Joel Fleischman, is once more on board in front of the camera and behind as an executive producer. The original series ran between 1990 and 1995, and originally followed the story of Fleischman, who has recently graduated from medical training and is set to practice in Anchorage for several years to repay the state of Alaska for underwriting his medical education. However, much to his chagrin, he is assigned to the much smaller, remote fictional town of Cicely, which is in need of a general practitioner.
There, he meets with the oddball locals, but comes to call the place home even as the series expanded its focus out to chart the lives of other characters including Maggie O'Connell (Janine Turner), Maurice Minnifield (Barry Corbin), Chris Stevens (John Corbett) and Shelly Tambo (Cynthia Geary). Northern Exposure logged 57 Emmy nominations during its run, winning 27 including Outstanding Drama Series in 1992.
While Morrow left the show during its final season, he'll be back as Fleischman, returning to Cicely for the funeral of an old friend, making new acquaintances and rekindling old ones. Josh Brand, one of the co-creators, is writing the new show, which original US network CBS has in development. There are no details as to when it might hit screens.
