2021 is set to be an incredible year for Chloé Zhao, the acclaimed filmmaker behind 2017’s The Rider. She’s back with a double-whammy of films expected to hit our screens this year that couldn’t be further apart in scope and subject, but that display the incredible and versatile talent of a must-watch director. One of those is Marvel’s upcoming cosmic comic-book blockbuster Eternals – but before that, we’ll be seeing Nomadland, a quietly powerful character drama boasting gorgeous cinematography, and another stellar performance from powerhouse actor Frances McDormand. Watch the international trailer exclusively here:

The film stars McDormand as Fern, an American woman who loses everything in the financial crisis and finds herself homeless, taking on a nomadic life travelling across the American West. Zhao wrote the screenplay, based on Jessica Bruder’s book Nomadland: Surviving America In The Twenty-First Century, and having bagged the top prize at both the Venice Film Festival and the Toronto International Film Festival, there’s a strong chance this one will be a major Oscar contender. Plus – as you might have seen by the star rating in the above trailer – we at Empire loved it too.

Here’s a look at the UK poster.

The film is due to arrive in the UK on 19 March – and you’ll certainly want to keep an eye out for it when it does. Plus, if all goes to plan then Zhao’s Eternals will also arrive on 5 November this year. How’s that for a double bill of creative opposites?
