BAFTA 2021 Winners: Nomadland And The Father Win Big

2. Nomadland

Everybody into the van! If there truly was a favourite film going into this evening's BAFTA awards, it was Chloé Zhao's Nomadland, which has been dominating awards ceremonies throughout the season. And so it proved again, as the roaming drama scored Best Film, Best Director for Zhao, Leading Actress for Frances McDormand, and Cinematography.

Anthony Hopkins, meanwhile, won Leading Actor for The Father (entirely deserved, though the predictions were leaning towards Ma Rainey's Black Bottom's Chadwick Boseman) and Best Adapted Screenplay for director Florian Zeller and co-writer Christopher Hampton. Promising Young Woman took Original Screenplay and Outstanding British Film, while Minari's Yuh-Jung Youn scored yet another Supporting Actress trophy, and gave a typically fun speech about the UK's snobbish reputation.

And we can't forget the triumphant Rocks – while the London-set teen movie didn't sweep the awards, Bukky Bakray won this year's BAFTA Rising Star award following her performance as the titular young woman, and Lucy Pardee took Best Casting.
