She last worked on Mulan, but Niki Caro is ready to go surfing for her next film. She's signed on to direct an untitled movie about female big wave surfers.
Charlize Theron will produce the film, which adapts Daniel Duane's New York Times article The Fight For Gender Equality In One of The Most Dangerous Sports On Earth, which chronicles surfers Bianca Valenti, Andrea Moller, Paige Alms and Keala Kennelly fighting for the right to compete in big-wave contests. Becky Johnston wrote the script for the film, and Netflix has already snapped it up.
There's no word yet on whether Theron will star in the film, but there's plenty of time for that – the film has yet to round up its cast. And she already has a strong connection to the streaming service after The Old Guard.
