Clearly deciding that the acting lark’s old hat, Jake Gyllenhaal has decided to get a new job in the exciting, fast-paced world of crime journalism... All right, so it’s actually just his scarily focused main character in writer Dan Gilroy’s directorial debut, Nightcrawler. The first trailer for the film has arrived courtesy of the Huffington Post.
Gyllenhaal, here, is Lou Bloom, a young man desperate for a job. And the gig he sets his sights on is the dark world of night-time freelance journalism, cranking up the police scanner for tips to the latest crime scene and finding the victims that can be usefully turned into lucrative footage.
When he finds a friend in Nina (Rene Russo), a veteran of the murky world of TV newsgathering, he spots an opportunity to makes his name – and ends up being more a part of the story than he ever imagined...
This looks to be a nightmarish vision of US newsgathering, set at a fever pitch and drenched in sweaty LA visuals. We’ll see if the full film lives up to that promise when it arrives here on November 14.
