Pre-production began last month on The Secret In Their Eyes, Billy Ray's remake of the Oscar-winning 2009 Argentinian thriller. But with the actual shoot not coming together quite as quickly as anticipated, there's been a change at the top of the casting. Gwyneth Paltrow has dropped out of the triangle that currently also includes Julia Roberts and Chiwetel Ejiofor, and negotiations are underway for Nicole Kidman to step in{ =nofollow}.

Juan Jose Campanella's original film had two male leads to one female, but after Roberts expressed an interest, Ray headed back to his keyboard to accommodate her. It makes for a refreshingly different dynamic at the top of the film, which will already be much changed from its progenitor.

Ray's other major task has been to find a way to adapt Campanella's work for a more US or internationally-flavoured story: finding something that can parallel the focus on Argentina’s military junta and its overtones of corruption.

What we know so far is that Ejiofor plays a former MI-5 agent haunted by an unsolved murder. Returning to Boston as part of a joint task force with the FBI, he uncovers a terrifying truth that changes everything about the past events he can’t let go. There’s no word yet on how the female roles will shake out.

Kidman's deal is not yet signed, but shooting is scheduled for the near future in Boston. Financiers IM Global will be selling the film at the AFM.
