As though controlled by some sort of classified order, the details about the Top Gun sequel – apparently only working titled Top Gun: Maverick – have not really emerged, despite the cameras already rolling. Now though, according to The Hollywood Reporter, we know that the film will feature the son of Anthony Edward's tragic Goose and that Nicholas Hoult, Glen Powell and Miles Teller are in the running to take the role.
Tom Cruise is, of course, back as Pete "Maverick" Mitchell, here we assume training a new generation of flyers in a world where drones are starting to take over some of their duties. Val Kilmer has also been confirmed as Iceman, but this would mark an even more emotional connection to the original as the death of Goose in Top Gun is one of its biggest plot turns. Whether this means Meg Ryan will be seen as the lad's mother is still a mystery.
Any of the three would work in the role, having made it through a big casting search, though there is some tiny part of us that wishes Ryan Gosling was up for the part. Just for the LOLs.
Joseph Kosinski is in the director's chair, and Top Gun 2, whatever it ends up being named, will be calling for landing clearance on 12 July next year.
