Launched back in 2013 with The Purge, the low-budget, solid return horror thriller series about a dystopian America where laws are relaxed for an annual 12-hour period and mayhem results, hit a box office hight with last year's prequel The First Purge. It's perhaps not surprising, then, that another entry is planned for release next year.
Little is known about the new movie, with even the title a mystery for now (we'd expect some variant on The Purge: Insert Word Here). All that is known at the moment is that original writer/director James DeMonaco will once again write the script, but seems likely to hand over shot-calling chores as he did with The First Purge.
The films are produced by the Blumhouse team and Michael Bay's Platinum Dunes company, with the budgets kept tight and the concept refreshed by exploring different corners of a world where even murder is legal the purge events. Might we get to explore a world where those opposed to it have finally put a stop to it, and the ramifications of that.
Also still a going concern? The spin-off TV series, which launched last year and has been renewed for a second season.
