Avengers: Infinity War

Look, at this point, you know what we're going to say. It's not even really news, but Avengers: Infinity War, to no-one's surprise, has once again topped the box office in the United States and continues to earn huge amounts around the world. In the US it took in $61.8 million, according to studio estimates.

That impressive, mere 46% drop means the Marvel behemoth has now earned $547.8 million in America, and its total overseas, thanks to a strong opening in China, topped $343 million. And that pushed the movie to $1.6 billion worldwide, passing Avengers Assemble and putting Jurassic World squarely in its sights as the next record-holder to fall to Thanos' might.

So what of the films that dared challenge? Melissa McCarthy's new comedy Life Of The Party, which despite opening in second, saw the writer/producer/performer score her lowest box office launch yet with just $18.5 million. In third place, action thriller Breaking In was targeted squarely at US Mother's Day and made $16.5 million. Which might not sound great, but when you compare that movie's $6 million budget to Party's $32 million, it's certainly a stronger result.

Elsewhere, there was mostly shuffling as Overboard sank two places to fourth and $10.1 million, while A Quiet Place, which has been holding extremely well, earned $6.4 million at fifth, despite being in its sixth week of release.

I Feel Pretty fell to sixth with $3.7 million, ahead of Rampage on $3.3 million and Tully, which took in $2.2 million.

Rounding out the top 10 were Black Panther (on its 13th week of release, no less), clawing in $1.9 million – it's still ahead of Infinity War in terms of domestic total, but won't be for too much longer – and documentary RBG about US Supreme Court Associate Justice Ruth Bader Ginsberg. That made $1.1 million, which was impressive in itself, given that it's only showing on 180 screens.
