Though it's still likely to get a frosty reception from the faithful (and Alan "don't adapt my work or I'll put a curse on your noggin" Moore), Damon Lindelof and HBO are pushing ahead with the plan for a new series based on Watchmen. The pilot, at the very least, is in production and the first actors have been cast. Regina King, Don Johnson, Tim Blake Nelson, Louis Gossett Jr., Adelaide Clemens and Andrew Howard will all appear.
Yesterday, Lindelof posted a long screed to Instagram, calling for fans' understanding and outlining the fact that while Moore, Dave Gibbons and John Higgins' work will be "remixed" and serve as the core canon for the show, the series will take place in the same universe, but in the present day, with new characters and stories.
So we don't yet know what anyone in that list at the top of the story will be playing, but King, according to Variety, is in the lead. Take your best guess as to whether any of the others will be classic characters from the original comicbook run or completely new creations.
The pilot will be the test as to whether HBO orders more of the show, though the channel is having Lindelof and his writers produce several scripts, so hopes are clearly high at the company.
