Despite declining ratings and increased criticism of recent seasons, The Walking Dead continues to be a powerhouse for US channel AMC. And the company is looking to keep expanding the world, announcing a new spin-off series.
With the promotion of showrunner Scott Gimple to more of an overall position developing and shepherding ideas for other series and films set in the apocalyptic world of the Dead, the universe has been growing ever larger, to include projects such as the films (TV or otherwise) that will continue the story of Andrew Lincoln's Rick Grimes.
But as for details of this new spin-off? We'll have to wait. "We’re not at a stage where we’ll be announcing its plans to premiere," Chief Operating Officer Ed Carroll said in an earnings call with Wall Street Analysts. "But we have hired creative people that have pitched story outlines. We feel very good about the development of that series." Which is nice.
The Walking Dead has seen a few of the main characters leave in the last few months, most notably Lincoln, and Danai Gurira's Michonne is next to depart, so we'll see whether adding to the fabric of the series (and Fear The Walking Dead) does anything to re-ignite interest.
