It's been a few of years since the last season of True Detective, which split audiences and critics as to its quality. The drama is returning next year with Mahershala Ali in the lead, and the new trailer has arrived online.
The new footage is a little more focused on the story, which according to the official synopsis, around "a macabre crime in the heart of the Ozarks, and a mystery that deepens over decades and plays out in three separate time periods." Ali stars in this one as Detective Wayne Hays, with Stephen Dorff playing his partner Roland West.
Ali's Hays is certainly haunted by the missing children case he tried to unravel in the 1980s, only to hit a wall of bitterness and racism.
Green Room's Jeremy Saulnier directed the first two episodes before leaving the show, with the remaining eight divvied up between creator (and primary writer) Nic Pizzolatto and Daniel Sackheim. The likes of Carmen Ejogo, Mamie Gummer, Scoot McNairy and Ray Fisher are also among the cast. The show returns to HBO on 13 January, which likely means it'll be back on Sky Atlantic either day and date or around the same time.
