The great Hayao Miyazaki may have hung up his brushes but his legacy, Studio Ghibli, slides seamlessly on. The next hand-crafted tale to emerge from the Japanese animation house is When Marnie Was There, and it has a new poster and English-language trailer to share.

The filmmaker behind this one is Hiromasa Yonebayashi, director on Arrietty in 2010 and a Ghibl animator since Princess Mononoke. The story, which he co-wrote, involves a girl sent one summer from her foster home in the city one to a quiet town by the sea in Hokkaido.

Feeling somewhat isolated as an outsider, she's pleased to encounter new bestie Marnie, who lives in the spooky old Marsh House. But there are questions: their friendship has to remain a secret, and Marnie can't move far from the mansion...

If you’re more of a purist when it comes to all things Ghibli, you’ll want to search out the Japanese language version. For everyone else, listen out for the voices of Hailee Steinfeld, Kathy Bates, Ellen Burstyn, John C. Reilly, Kiernan Shipka, Geena Davis, Catherine O'Hara, Raini Rodriguez and Vanessa Williams.

When Marnie Was There makes its UK bow on June 10. Head here for our exclusive guide to Ghibli’s output curated by Hayao Miyazaki himself.
