Richard Ayoade's second directorial feature, The Double, is winging its way to the big screen and The Guardian has a first-look trailer giving an idea of what to expect. Click here to watch it.

The one-time IT Crowd man and publishing svengali Dean Lerner in Garth Marenghi's Darkplace wowed us all with his terrific debut Submarine, and after a brief sojourn to join Stiller, Vaughn and co in The Watch, he's back behind the camera with a film inspired by Fyodor Dostoevsky's 1846 novella The Double.

While many of its finer details are under wraps, we do know that it tells the story of an insignificant man (Jesse Eisenberg) driven almost to a breakdown by the appearance of his doppelganger. We also know that Ayoade intends it to reflect on loneliness and our inherent need to love and be loved.

Judging by the trailer, it's a less whimsical work than Submarine, setting its protagonist's fraying psyche in the kind of claustrophobically bureaucratic world so beloved of Charlie Kaufman films.

Appearing alongside Eisenberg are Mia Wasikowska, Wallace Shawn, Rade Serbedzija, James Fox and Yasmin Paige. The Double lands with us in 2014.
