Last season Supergirl enjoyed a ratings spike when Grant Gustin guest starred as The Flash, so it’s no surprise that another crossover is planned for this year. Less expected is the fact that this season’s two-episode crossover is going to be a musical. Among those breaking into song from The Flash will be Gustin and Jesse L. Martin, while the Supergirl side of things will include Melissa Benoist and Jeremy Jordan. While most of the songs will be pre-existing, there will be some originals written specifically for the shows.
Supergirl executive producer Ali Adler, who worked with both Gustin and Benoist on Glee, muses, “When they’re not acting or flying or punching or exploding things, they’re singing.” As to why they’ll be singing, executive producer Greg Berlanti notes, “We’ve toyed with who potentially the villain could kind of be. My sense is we’ll be very careful about how it is they kind of break into song and there will probably be an element of being in some character’s head at the time.”
There have been other shows that have broken format to provide musical episodes, most famously Joss Whedon’s “Once More With Feeling,” a sixth season episode of Buffy The Vampire Slayer that, due to the machinations of a demon, had the entire cast break into song and dance.
