It’s award season and while **Spy **may perhaps lack the heavyweight credentials of typical Oscar bait, it’s a hot favourite for Empire’s hastily cobbled-together Most Astonishing Cast Ever gong. Any film that can boast, as Paul Feig’s new espionage caper does, 50 Cent, Allison Janney, Jason Statham, Melissa McCarthy AND Miranda Hart has something going for it. An unhinged wrap party for one thing. Take a look at the film’s first trailer below, courtesy of Yahoo! Movies.
McCarthy is back for a third collaboration with writer/director Feig – soon to add a fourth if those Ghostbusters 3** rumours turn out to be true – and this time suits up as a deskbound CIA wonk called Susan Cooper. When things go horribly awry for the Agency’s spooks, she puts her hand up to help up out on a secret op.
Cooper may not have expert field craft or weapons training, or for that matter, any idea what she’s doing but she does have a tidy line in her mother’s negative aphorisms (“making a wave isn’t always brave, Susan”) and judging by the trailer, she’s a fast learner.
Also aboard is **Bridesmaids **alum Rose Byrne, Jude Law, Bobby Cannavale and Peter Serafinowicz. No sign of Fiddy as yet.
**Spy **creeps not too stealthily into our cinemas on June 5.
