It's a real release date-a-palooza around the studio system right now. Thanks to the big, if not entirely unexpected shift of Star Wars: Episode VIII from May 2017, a round of musical chairs has seen Disney shift the fifth Pirates Of The Caribbean into its old slot, and Sony moving to push the Tom Holland-starring Spider-Man into July 7 of that year.
Spider-Man, despite being still a Sony property, shares a little more synergy with Disney and Marvel these days thanks to last year's deal that allowed the web-slinger to show up in Captain America: Civil War before spinning back off into his own rebooted universe with Holland as the latest Peter Parker and Jon Watts directing the film. The new Spidey, which will also see Marisa Tomei playing Aunt May is holding off shooting a little longer for script tweaks.
That, of course, is the US release date: we were set to see the film on July 28 previously, but there's no official word yet as to whether the date here will change in response to the shift in the States.
In related Sony news, the studio is now planning its Jumanji remake – which recently saw Jake Kasdan hired to direct – for that old July 28, 2017 date, shifting from its previous location of Christmas Day this year. That would make sense given that Kasdan has only just come aboard and the film would seem to require some hefty effects work to bring the enchanted board game world to life.
