We’ve seen them moving around in the teaser, and peeking over the edge of the frame intheir first, Times Square-set photo, but this latest image of the eponymous creatures from The Smurfs shows that they’ll also be spending some time in Central Park. Oh, and we also get a proper look at more of the Smurfy heroes.
The plot for the movie sees bad guy wizard Gargamel (Hank Azaria) tracking down the Smurf village, forcing the inhabitants to flee through a magical portal, which just so happens to lead to our world. There, they must enlist the help of a bloke named Johan (Neil Patrick Harris) to get back to their own universe even as Gargamel follows them through with the intention of finishing what he started…
While the movie seems clearly pitched towards a younger generation (with perhaps a few nostalgic nods to those who remember the books and ‘toons of old), we’ve got to admit one big stumbling block just from this picture – turning the little blue ones into 3D CG characters just makes them look… well… slightly disturbing. It’s almost Yogi Bear all over again.

Still, there’s time for the animators to work on that, as the film doesn’t arrive until August 3. And we’re intrigued by the quality voice cast, which includes Anton Yelchin, Alan Cumming, John Oliver, Katy Perry and The Office’s BJ Novak. But here’s the big question for you lot: does this make you want to see the finished movie?
