As if to atone for the distinctly dodgy angel actioner Legion, director Scott Stewart and star Paul Bettany are back with another scrap-heavy effort, Priest. And now the film has a new trailer, which you can watch below.
Priest is set in a dystopian future where mankind is worn down by the ravages of centuries of battle against freakish vampire creatures. No longing looks and sparkly foreheads here: this lot are slavering beasts and mad-eyed killers. But as the film opens, all is seemingly at peace after the religious leaders of the world took matters into their own hands and trained up a group of warrior clerics who managed to destroy the vampire menace. Or so they thought…
Bettany is one of the veteran priests who finds himself shunned by society and forced to go up against his own church when the vamps attack his brother and kidnap his niece. Cue him striking off on his own into the wasteland, pursued by former colleagues intent on stopping what they see as a crazed crusade.
While it looks like Stewart and co had a few more dollars to spend this time, it does all come across as very serious and grim, with only Karl Urban appearing to have much fun with the OTT concept. Still, we’ll be able to judge properly when it hits our screens. Check out the trailer and let us know your thoughts.
As it has been prophesied, so shall it be: Priest arrives in cinemas on May 13.
