There's something about the humble movie hammer that gives us the shivers. Not so much when it's clutched in the hand of Ryan Gosling and he's using it to build a house for his girlfriend. No, more the Kill List / Repo Men / Drive school of cranial smush tool useage. And Josh Brolin's vengeful ad exec clearly isn't using his to hang paintings in this new poster for Spike Lee's Oldboy.
Lee's remake of the Park Chan-wook classic seems to have been in production so long we'd begun to lose hope of ever seeing it. It's now moving towards a November release in the US and will start creating a stir at the New York Comic-Con event this weekend. It shouldn't take much to get a buzz building: the Chan-wook origin has fans almost as fanatical as Brolin's character, although it remains to be seen which way that buzz will go.
**Oldboy **sees businessman Joe Doucett (Brolin) kidnapped, drugged and imprisoned in a weird hotel room-like chamber for 20 years. Then, without warning, he’s released and set on a mission to discover who locked him away, and, even more importantly, why.
Along the way, he’ll have to deal with henchmen and heartbreak, and terrible secrets that could destroy him. Brolin leads a cast that also includes Sharlto Copley, Samuel L. Jackson, Elizabeth Olsen and Michael Imperioli.
**Oldboy **opens in the US on November 27. UK release details should follow soon.
