We've already had one look at Tom Hanks in character as US TV icon Mr. Rogers in the new film about a friendship in the man's life, and an official image from the film now known as A Beautiful Day In The Neighbourhood is here to follow it.
Though the cosy, charming, and child-friendly presenter of Mister Rogers' Neighborhood might not be quite as iconic in the UK as he was in the States (though the criminally un-Oscar-nominated documentary Won't You Be My Neighbor? may have helped), his remains a universal story of a good man helping to make the world a little bit better. The script for the new movie, written by Micah Fitzerman-Blue and Noah Harpster, chronicles a particular chunk of Rogers' life and the effect he had on one person in particular: journalist Tom Junod (name-changed likely for legal reasons to Lloyd Vogel and played in the film by Matthew Rhys). A cynical, award-winning writer, Junod begrudgingly agreed to write a profile on Rogers for Esquire, only to find his perspective on life changed by the encounter.
Marielle Heller, fresh off the success of Can You Ever Forgive Me?, is directing the film, which also features Enrico Colantoni, Chris Cooper and Maryann Plunkett. A Beautiful Day In The Neighbourhood will be unleashing its weapons-grade charm on US audiences from 22 November and in the UK on 6 December.
