Among the outpouring of Lucasfilm news during the Disney Investor’s Update came some more concrete word of the next Indiana Jones adventure. As well as a slew of brand-new Star Wars shows, and the news that Patty Jenkins is going to be directing a big-screen Star Wars film titled Rogue Squadron, the presentation shored up some Indy news that’s been in the ether for a while now.
Firstly, there was confirmation that James Mangold is indeed directing the film – making it the first Indy adventure not to be helmed by Steven Spielberg. And as for when that helming will happen, Mangold is set to begin production in spring 2021 – enough time to get the film ready for its release slot in July 2022. It was also notably referred to as the ‘final’ Indiana Jones film – perhaps with the intention of sending the series off on a high note after the disappointment of Kingdom Of The Crystal Skull.
Kathleen Kennedy and Frank Marshall are the main producers as usual, and Spielberg will act as executive producer on the film. Harrison Ford will be back as Indy himself, with Jonathan Kasdan on scripting duties.
