Could you have predicted that Pokémon: Detective Pikachu would become one of the more intriguing films of the year, if only in a "will-it-work-or-will-this-speeding-car-crash" kind of way? We don't believe you. Yet here we are, with Ryan Reynolds voicing a squat, yellow creature who also happens to be a world-class detective. You couldn't make it up, but someone did, and there's a new trailer to prove that.

The story sees ace private eye Harry Goodman (Paul Kitson) go mysteriously missing, prompting his 21-year-old son Tim (Justice Smith) to find out what happened. Aiding in the investigation is Harry’s former Pokémon partner, Detective Pikachu (Reynolds): a hilariously wise-cracking, adorable super-sleuth who is a puzzlement even to himself.

Finding that they are uniquely equipped to communicate with one another, Tim and Pikachu join forces on a thrilling adventure to unravel the tangled mystery. Chasing clues together through the neon-lit streets of Ryme City – a sprawling, modern metropolis where humans and Pokémon live side by side in a hyper-realistic live-action world – they encounter a diverse cast of Pokémon characters and uncover a shocking plot that could destroy this peaceful co-existence and threaten the whole Pokémon universe.

Rob Letterman is busy finishing the movie, and the likes of Suki Waterhouse, Bill Nighy, Kathryn Newton and Karan Soni are also in the cast.

Reynolds has released a funny video poking fun at him going truly method to play Pikachu in the film, featuring a comically exasperated Blake Lively wondering what the hell her other half is up to this time. Drawn from life? We figure.

Pokémon: Detective Pikachu itself will be out on 10 May.
