Kirk and Spock turn badass in new shots

A brand new, much moodier set of posters for J.J. Abrams' Star Trek have hit the Net this morning. These shadowy, black and white, close-cropped head-shots show Chris Pine as Kirk and Zachary Quinto as Spock throw off the colourful, retro feel of the images that leaked last month. It's a surprising move for Abrams, who has long maintained that the film would be a bright, light-hearted affair rather than a dark and gritty experience like that of The Dark Knight.

We could be extrapolating, but the use of these darker, more sombre shots (using chiaroscuro, which is arty speak for the use of contrast between dark and light) could be a knee-jerk marketing reaction to fan reservations about the film's retro look. Fans' responses to the first shots from the film were mixed, with many die hard Trekkers expecting a darker feel rather than the saturated primary colours that were ultimately revealed. That said, the four Comic-Con posters that arrived this summer were similarly glowering (though rather less monochrome) affairs so we may be reading far too much into this. ![New, Darker Star Trek Posters]

Either way, they're great shots and you can gaze adoringly at them until the release of the full trailer, which will hit US cinemas before Quantum Of Solace at the end of the week.
