It's the ciiiiircle of life. And, in Disney's lifetime, the circle involves turning its hefty animated back catalogue into live-action films. Though in the case of The Jungle Book and now The Lion King's Jon Favreau, that has been more of a hybrid blend, with the new movie in particular, freed from needing a human character, going fully CG for everything from its lead to most of the backgrounds. New character posters are online and can be found below.
First, we have the main character, Simba, voiced in his grown state by Donald Glover.
Next up, the king when Simba's a young lion, his sensible and strong father Mufasa, voiced by the one, the only, the forever cinematic take on the character, James Earl Jones.
Mufasa's wise counsel comes from Rafiki, played by a man with some experience of being a king elsewhere (Black Panther's T'Chaka) John Kani.
Other advice comes from the nervy, proper bird Zazu, who will get his comic timing this go-around from John Oliver.
A much less noble character, Simba's calculating and ambitious uncle Scar (you've got to think the poor guy was given a bad lot, though with that name), voiced by Chiwetel Ejiofor.
Simba's future love interest and best pal in his youth, Nala, brought to life by Beyoncé Knowles-Carter.
Timon is a cheeky, loveable meerkat who teaches Simba the ways of the world once he's exiled by Scar. In this new version, Billy Eichner gives him voice.
Seth Rogen provides the vocal performance for Pumbaa, Timon's best bud and world-class farter.
Finally, the younger version of Simba, as played by Little's JD McCrary.
They're just a sampling of the cast for the film, which arrives in cinemas on 19 July. The latest TV spot is lurking at the bottom of the page.
