With each Captain Marvel trailer, we’re getting a better look at Marvel Studios’ latest addition to the MCU – and this third one, while relatively short, highlights some different tones to Carol Danvers’ arrival. There’s more of what we’ve already seen – fresh Skrulls, new bits with Jude Law’s still-unnamed character training a powered-up Danvers, and a clearer look at the Kree incident that gives Captain Marvel her abilities – but beyond that, there’s a greater emphasis on Marvel’s trademark snappy dialogue. Plus, the Earth-bound part of the film with Danvers teaming up with a de-aged Nick Fury looks increasingly like a buddy movie.

There’s some intriguing new stuff here, with a glimpse of an evil alien Skrull mid-shape-shift, plenty of witty repartee between Brie Larson and Samuel L. Jackson, and a tone more akin to the Guardians movies.

Captain Marvel’s entrance into the Marvel Cinematic Universe is sure to shape the entire series heading forward – not only will she play a role in Avengers: Endgame, but she’s perhaps the most powerful hero introduced so far. And with some of the original Avengers expected to bow out in the near future and a history with Nick Fury, it seems likely she could be drafted in to Earth’s Mightiest Heroes in the future. The film comes from directors Anna Boden and Ryan Fleck (Half Nelson, Mississippi Grind), with Gemma Chan, Annette Bening, and Djimon Hounsou among the cast.

Captain Marvel will blast into UK cinemas on 8 March.
