For many people, the strongest memory or closest pop cultural tie-in to Anna Sewell's 1877 novel Black Beauty will be the theme tune to the 1970s TV series The Adventures Of Black Beauty, which you can find here. Bolt Pictures and Constantin Film clearly think there's life in the old mare yet, hiring Ashley Avis to write and direct a modern spin on the story.
This take will focus on Jo Green, a teenager who has recently been orphaned. She's dispatched to live with her uncle at an animal sanctuary on Long Island and ends up bonding with the title character, a wild mustang snatched from her family who is recuperating but nervy around humans. Avis is a writer and director who has made films such as Deserted and this year's Adolescence.
Black Beauty is a story that has been brought to the screen several times, in 1946, 1971, 1994, and in 2015, which also switched the story to a contemporary setting. We await your torrent of "beating a dead horse" comments.
