Long struggling through the development process, the film adaptation of Tom Clancy-spawned game title The Division looked doomed to never make it to the screen, despite the presence of Jake Gyllenhaal and Jessica Chastain in the lead roles and Deadpool 2 director David Leitch attached. But game company Ubisoft has announced that Netflix have picked up the rights to make and stream the film.

Gyllenhaal and Chastain have been on board the film for a while now, acting as producers as well as the leads. The third-person shooter title, which became a massive seller across different platforms, is set in a dangerous New York in the wake of a massive smallpox epidemic. In the various missions, you must work as part of the Strategic Homeland Division to rebuild its operations in the Big Apple, track down the cause of the outbreak and fight crime that pops up in the city.

This would appear to along the lines of Netflix's bigger swings, including Bright and this year's 6 Underground, which Michael Bay is busy shepherding through post-production. Rafe Jenkins is writing the latest script for The Division and with luck it might finally arrive next year.
