Amy Adams-starring thriller The Woman In The Window has already seen its share of issues, from Disney buying Fox, putting the film's release date into more of a limbo state and reports of re-shoots after disappointment from early test screenings. Now, according to Deadline, Netflix will take Joe Wright's new film off of Disney's hands.
This sounds like it might be the best outcome for the film at this point – though the level of concern about Disney letting it go is naturally high, finding a new home at Netflix means it'll enjoy a built-in audience without the need for a big cinema release. And Netflix gets more content, loaded with star names, to lure in subscribers and maintain current viewers.
Adams plays Anna Fox, an agoraphobic child psychologist who lives alone in a New York suburb. She’s stuck in the brownstone and her fear of leaving home cost her a separation from her husband and daughter. She fills her day watching film noir classics and her interaction is mostly online. She spies on her neighbours like they do in the movies she loves. Things get interesting for her when the Russell clan moves in next door and she observes the bond between parents and their teen son that make her long for a reunion with her own family. It takes a turn when she witnesses an act of violence in the house, but when she calls the cops, things get even more complicated. Julianne Moore, Gary Oldman, Tracy Letts (who also wrote the script), Bryan Tyree Henry, Jennifer Jason Leigh, Anthony Mackie and Wyatt Russell fill out the cast.
It's all very Rear Window and fits into the sort of genre pushed forward by Gone Girl. Given that the deal is still at an early stage, there's no release date set yet.
