A third entry in adventurous franchise National Treasure has been chipping away at the development rock face for more than a decade now. It feels as though there have been hundreds of script drafts at this point, but nothing has ever left that stage. Now, though, producer Jerry Bruckheimer confirms that not only is the third film still in the works, but also a TV spin-off for Disney+.
The team at Collider, who presumably broke into Bruckheimer's office, figured out a sequence of twisting the awards on a shelf and found a secret room (or, er, just called him), got Bruckheimer on the record about the latest word on the Treasure projects, including an update on the small screen version.
“We’re certainly working on one for streaming and we’re working on one for the big screen. Hopefully, they’ll both come together and we’ll bring you another National Treasure, but they’re both very active... The one for Disney+ is a much younger cast. It’s the same concept but a young cast. The one for theatrical would be the same cast."
So perhaps we will one day see more of Nic Cage running around solving mysteries and generally being odd in the pursuit of secrets. And what of the TV series? given the history of the third movie, we'll wait and see if it happens.
