There was good news for fans of gone-too-soon horror drama Penny Dreadful when its Stateside home, cable channel Showtime announced a spin-off called Penny Dreadful: City Of Angels. An eclectic cast has been brought together to give it life, and the latest addition is Nathan Lane.
Boasting original creator and writer John Logan back on board, City Of Angels opens in 1938 Los Angeles for a story that the channel describes as "a time and place deeply infused with Mexican-American folklore and social tension." Rooted in the conflict between characters connected to the deity Santa Muerte and others allied with the devil, the series will explore a mix of the supernatural and the combustible reality of that period, creating new occult myths and moral dilemmas within a historical backdrop.
Lane, in a role that feels unlike what he's often asked to play, will be Lewis Michener. A veteran officer in the LAPD, wise to the ways of the world and ruthless in pursuit of his goals, Lewis becomes the partner and mentor of fellow cop Tiago Vega (Daniel Zovatto).
Natalie Dormer also recently joined a cast that also includes Jessica Garza and Johnathan Nieves.
