Yes, Heathcliff, it's she, it's Cathy, she's come home; she's so co-ho-ho-hold. And she looks a lot like Natalie Portman.

Portman has signed on to star in a new version of Emily Bronte's Wuthering Heights, a tempestuous romance between the put-upon Heathcliff and headstrong Catherine, set against the Yorkshire moors. There hasn't been a film adaptation of the book, at least in the English language, since 1993, but the most famous version remains the Laurence Olivier-Merle Oberon adaptation from 1939.

John Maybury (The Edge of Love) will direct. Maybury and Portman both seem well suited to the project. Portman's at her best when playing strong-willed, almost belligerent, characters and Maybury has a gift for making the depressing look beautiful – which the dark moors should give plenty of opportunity for – and he's not one to shy away from the gloomier recesses of the human psyche.
