The star power of Angelina Jolie and Johnny Depp was no match for Aslan’s roar this weekend as The Chronicles of Narnia: The Voyage of the Dawn Treader sailed to the top of a lacklustre weekend at the box office across the pond. While Narnia managed to eke out a win, the $24.5 million start to this third entry in the series (the first since Fox took it over) won’t exactly have the bean-counters dancing for joy, especially if you consider that The Lion, the Witch and the Wardrobe kicked off with $65.5 million.
Still, it was enough to beat out The Tourist, with Depp and Jolie floundering in the face of some terrible reviews. The romantic action caper arrived with $17 million in the bank. Tangled dropped down to third from first place, but still managed to pull in $14.5 million in its third week. The first part of The Deathly Hallows, meanwhile, saw Harry Potter and company down to fourth place, with $8.5 million added to a US total of more than $257 million. Rounding out the top five, we find Unstoppable, rolling down the tracks for $3.7 million.
Swinging up like a ballet dancer held aloft by a strangely codpieced fellow performer, Darren Aronofsky’s Black Swan leapt into the top 10 from 13th place as it opened wider to successful effect. The film nabbed $3.3 million this weekend. That put it ahead of a very different type of psychological horror set to music, Burlesque, which dropped from third place to seventh and made $3.2 million.
At eighth, Love and Other Drugs continued to have a tough time, earning $3 million and Due Date fell to ninth with $2.54 million. And in 10th we find Megamind, which grabbed $2.51 million.
