With the success of the first two low-budget Purge thrillers, the films have taken on even more satirical dimensions, but even writer/director James DeMonaco couldn't have predicted the madness going on in the American election cycle this year. So this year's entry, Election Year, feels less like dystopian warning and more like future documentary. Check out the latest trailer below.
The annual event where all laws are relaxed and anything goes for 12 hours across one night has become even more controversial in the years since it began, especially as "murder tourists" from around the world are now allowed to take part. And then there's the rising backlash, pointing out that it's usually used to target low-income people while the rich stay safe in their gated complexes. One such voice calling for an end to the annual chaos is senator Charlene "Charlie" Roan (Elizabeth Mitchell), who lost her family one Purge night and is running for president while crusading for the legalised crime spree's abolition.
Naturally, this slaps a great big target on her back, and she's especially in danger once those in power decide to off her during the next Purge. Thank goodness, then, that she has Frank Grillo's tough nut running her security team. Still, they're forced to go on the run when someone on his staff betrays them...
The Purge: Election Year hits the US on July 1 (just in time for the July 4 holiday!) and makes its way across the pond on July 15.
