Writer/director/creator Sam Esmail and star Rami Malek have made an effective team for the last few season of Mr. Robot on TV, and now they're aiming to bring that collaboration to cinemas for a new based-on-truth film called American Radical.
Universal bought the rights to Tamer Elnoury and Kevin Maurer’s book American Radical: Inside The World Of An Undercover Muslim FBI Agent, with the aim to develop it into a movie. It'll follow Elnoury's activities as a longtime undercover agent, who joined the agency's elite counter-terrorism unit after September 11. He helped to take down a terror cell buried within the United States, foiling their plans in the nick of time using tried and trusted techniques.
Esmail is attached to produce and direct and Malek will take the lead if everything comes together. The next step is to find a writer to take on the script, as Esmail is a little busy with new series Homecoming for Amazon and then has to segue into season four of Mr. Robot. Malek, meanwhile, will be seen in Papillon (out in the US on 24 August and screening 24 June at the Edinburgh International Film Festival), and Bohemian Rhapsody, which is due on 24 October in the UK.
