We picked Moulin Rouge as this year's best film, and obviously the American National Board of Review agrees. In the first event to kick off the awards season the NBR's annual film awards have picked Baz Luhrman's musical as the best film of the year. Moulin Rouge also won a Best Supporting Actor accolade for Britain's Jim Broadbent - who was commended for his his role in Moulin as well as the upcoming film Iris. Meanwhile, although it hasn't even been released yet - the first Lord of the Rings film picked up three awards. Director Peter Jackson was named for a Special Achievement in Filmmaking award, while the film itself picked up two more - one for Best Production Design and another through Cate Blanchett who wins Best Supporting Actress for her roles in The Fellowship of the Ring, The Man Who Cried and The Shipping News. The board's top acting honours went to Billy Bob Thornton for his work in Bandits, The Man Who Wasn't There and Monster's Ball. Thornton's Monsters co-star Halle Berry nabbed the Best Actress award. The Best Director award went to newcomer Todd Field for In The Bedroom. The NBR also listed their top 10 films of 2001 which goes as follows: Moulin Rouge In The Bedroom Ocean's 11 Memento Monster's Ball Black Hawk Down The Man Who Wasn't There AI Artificial Intelligence The Pledge Mulholland Drive.
