Dear trailer editors and marketing teams: we know you love doing this for a certain type of movie (rom-coms, usually), but there comes a time when you really, really don’t need to see the whole film’s plot in the promo. Which is why we’re a little disappointed by this first trailer for Morning Glory, starring Rachel McAdams, Harrison Ford, Diane Keaton and Patrick Wilson.
We’re extra disappointed here because of the talent both in front of the camera (the cast also includes Jeff Goldblum doing his trademark laidback shtick) and behind it (director Roger Michell made Notting Hill and Enduring Love, while write Aline Brosh McKenna penned The Devil Wears Prada) are worthy of better. And let’s not forget that this is a Bad Robot production, with JJ Abrams on board, a man who has shown he understands the value of a good trailer.
But then, the movie itself – which finds McAdams as a TV producer charged with revitalising a slumping morning show, hiring grouchy Ford as a new co-anchor for Keaton and seeing the sparks fly – ends up looking a little average. The predictable beats on show here include McAdams finding love with co-worker Wilson and Ford teaching her a little bit about what’s really important in life (hint: it’s not necessarily her job).
So while we remain hopeful that Adams has pushed to keep the really good, original bits out of this trailer, take a gander for yourself and make your own judgement.
