It was just last month that we learned Christopher McQuarrie, Tom Cruise and the rest of the Mission: Impossible 5** team were racing to finish the film that much more quickly as the release date had, in an unusual move, been shifted forward to this July from a planned December release. Now, according to The Hollywood Reporter, McQuarrie and co. halted production for a week in order to rewrite the finale{
Such delays are not unheard of on big films, but with the ticking clock on the new Mission: Impossible – which is still in production, by the way – it’s somewhat surprising to learn of the break. Still, it allows for McQuarrie, Cruise and a reported unnamed third writer to make the big finale of the film that much better. While you place your bets on whom this shadowy third figure might be, McQuarrie, with typical wit, took to Twitter to respond to the trade mag.

Much about the film is still being kept under a tight veil of security other than the basics: it has shot around Vienna and the UK and also spent time in Morocco. Jeremy Renner, Simon Pegg and Ving Rhames are all back, with Alec Baldwin, Rebecca Ferguson, Sean Harris and Simon McBurney among the new recruits for this one.
There’s no sign of a trailer yet, though McQuarrie has promised on Twitter to announce when we’ll see it. Cut the man a break, he’s a bit busy... The film will be out on here July 31.
