When the studio isn't busy turning its animated back catalogue into new movies, Disney is planning other projects that draw from previous stories. The latest take on festival fairy tale The Nutcracker is taking shape with director Lasse Hallström and now he's adding Miranda Hart to the cast.

The new movie is called The Nutcracker And The Four Realms, and will be expanding on E.T.A. Hoffman's original story, The Nutcracker And The Mouse King. The tale, already famously turned into a hugely successful ballet by Tchaikovsky, follows a young girl named Clara who receives a nutcracker doll from her godfather one Christmas Eve. Seized with the need to see her present as the clock strikes midnight on Christmas Day, she's transported into a fantastical world rent asunder by a conflict between gingerbread soldiers and an army of mice.

Ashleigh Powell has written the latest adaptation, and Mackenzie Foy, Morgan Freeman, Keira Knightley, ballerina Misty Copeland and Helen Mirren are all in the cast. Hart is set to play a fairy named Dew Drop, who in her inimitable style, will be bringing some laughs to the film.

Hart, who stole scenes last year in Spy, is part of the cast for a new animated version of The Canterville Ghost, which should be on screens next year.
