Miley Cyrus Is Number One In The US

We're not completely sure what a Miley Cyrus is, but it sounds contagious. If you find one on any part of your anatomy, particularly your bathing suit area, you should consult your doctor immediately as, if caught early, most can be cured with a course of antibiotics and a firm flick. One of these was found adhered to the top of the US box office this week where it beat off all other competition and took $29 million starring with someone called Hannah Montana in Best of Both Worlds Concert Tour. Medical experts are recommending we all stay indoors until it goes away. Drink lots of fluids and do not take your fingers out of your ears, even if this makes it difficult to pick up your drink.

The top four movies at the US this week all starred women in the lead roles, something that doesn't often happen in this industry where teenage boys call the commercial shots. It was, of course, Superbowl weekend, so there may have been a lot of sports widows fleeing to cinemas to escape their gaseous husbands and their rantings in the direction of the TV. While tween stars Hannah Montana took the top spot, Jessica Alba made a decent $13 million with horror movie The Eye, her first attempt at taking a lead in something dramatic since she hit the big time. 27 Dresses and Juno took three and four, with $8.4 million and $7.5 million, respectively. The latter has now cruised past $110 million.

It was bad news for last week's big hitters. Both Meet The Spartans and Rambo tumbled by 61.5%, taking fifth and sixth spots with $7.1 million and $7 million respectively. However, Meet The Spartans has probably already made more than it cost with its $28 million haul so far and Rambo should, with a good wind, at least break even in the US. It cost $50 million and has so far earned just shy of $30 million.

It's another bad week for Cloverfield, which, after a massive opening, has seen its takings drop drastically again to just $4.9 million in its third week. But since it's almost tripled its $25 million budget, it's unlikely that Paramount will be too upset.

The only other major new entries were Eva Longoria comedy Over Her Dead Body, which provided headline writers with extremely easy pickings by being dead on arrival with $4.6 million. The collective comic talents of Justin Long and Steve Zahn couldn't keep Strange Wilderness from flopping like a fat man off a diving board, thumping to number 13 with $3 million.
