They've both been switching between big budget and indie films, but now Michelle Williams and Oscar Isaac are teaming up for an HBO limited series that will remake Ingmar Bergman's 1974 Swedish film Scenes From A Marriage – itself a condensed version of a miniseries.
Our Boys and The Affair co-creator Hagai Levi will write and direct the new show, which re-examines the show’s iconic depiction of love, hatred, desire, monogamy, marriage and divorce through the lens of a contemporary American couple, played by Isaac and Williams. The original starred Liv Ullmann and Erland Josephson, and Bergman’s script, the story of a disintegration of a marriage, drew on his own experiences, including his relationship with Ullmann.
As per usual right now, there's no word on when the miniseries might shoot or air, especially given that it'll need scenes that could be tough to shoot during the pandemic (though they could take a cue from this film), and we'll likely end up waiting until next year at the earliest.
