She’s been the Bionic Woman. She’s tackled James Nesbitt as Jekyll. She’s even tangled with a Timelord in Doctor Who. So it makes perfect sense that Michelle Ryan might know what to do when a horde of zombies is unleashed. Good thing, too, since she’s just been cast in Matthias Hoene’s horror comedy Cockneys vs. Zombies.

Written by Severance’s James Moran, the bloodthirsty tale will see a group of bank robbers (including Ryan and Control’s Harry Treadaway) cracking open a 350-year-old vault and discover more than the loot they were after when an army of flesh-hungry zomboids emerges.

Cemetery Junction’s Jack Doolan is also in the cast alongside acting legend Honor Blackman, Rasmus Hardiker, Ashley Thomas and Alan Ford.

Yes, it would seem that 2011 really is the year that the versus genre becomes overstuffed, with Western/sci-fi adventure Cowboys and Aliens arriving in cinemas and any number of crossovers (Boy Scouts vs. Zombies, Zombies vs. Robots) in development. And even though it doesn’t mention it in the title, Attack the Block’s tagline is “Inner city vs. outer space”. Which, we think you’ll agree, gets a pass because it’s genius.

Cockneys vs. Zombies starts shooting next week in London.
